GREEN BAY, Wisc. – For the second straight game, Cleveland State (2-4-3, 0-2-1) faced a two-goal deficit, but this time couldn't obtain a point as Green Bay (7-3-0, 2-1-0) prevailed 3-2 on Saturday afternoon.
The Phoenix obtained the 1-0 lead in the third minute as Chris Album finished off a cross from So Nishikawa. The scoreline remained the same heading into the intermission despite the Vikings holding a 4-3 edge in shots on goal.
Green Bay tacked on a second goal five minutes into the second half as Myles Sophanavong scored on his corner kick to lead 2-0.
Cleveland State broke through in the 61st minute as
Matteo Correia finished off a pass from
Stefan Velickovic to trail 2-1. GB received a red card three minutes later, forcing them to play a man down for the remainder of the contest.
The Vikings drew even in the 73rd minute as
Marko Rimac found the back of the net off a pass from
Bojan Kolevski. However, Green Bay netted the game-winner in the 83rd minute as Nishikawa capitalized on a bad clearance off a long throw-in, winning 3-2.
Green Bay held a slim 15-14 edge in shots while the Vikings led in shots on goal, 9-8. The Green and White had a commanding 10-3 advantage in corner kicks.
M. Rimac led the game with six shots including four on frame.
Caleb Trowbridge and
Josip Rimac each had two shots.
Ryan Poling made his season debut in goal, finishing with five saves.
Cleveland State will have the week off before traveling to Northern Kentucky on Saturday, Oct. 5 for a 7 p.m. game.
