Cleveland State Volleyball Closes Non-League Play With 3-1 Win Over Akron

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State volleyball team closed out non-league play with a victory Friday, picking up a 3-1 win over Akron. With the win, the Vikings extended their current win streak to five straight matches, while they are now 9-2 overall this season.

Nia Hall paced the Viking offense with 14 kills on a .400 hitting percentage (14-4-25), while Liberty Torres added 13 kills and JeriLynn Koehler chipped in 11.

Ella Mihacevich posted 42 assists on the match, along with seven digs, five kills and two blocks.

The CSU defense was led by Emma Walker and Laken Voss who both recorded 15 digs, while Ayva Leon recorded 11 on the night.

As a team, the Vikings combined for 12.0 total blocks, including five from Torres and Julia Jozefov.

After dropping the first set, the Vikings rebounded in the second frame, picking up a 25-21 victory to even the match at one set each.

During the third set, the Vikings opened with a 7-0 run and went on to hold the lead throughout the remainder of the frame. After holding off a late Akron run, CSU regained a 21-18 lead on a Vayda Delventhal service ace, while a Koehler kill gave the Vikings set point and an Akron error closed out the 25-21 victory.

Cleveland State then carried its momentum into the fourth set, gaining a 14-9 lead midway through the frame. The Vikings then went on a 4-0 run a few points later, extending their lead to 18-10 on a Mihacevich service ace.

The Vikings were able to close out the frame by posting the final two points, clinching the 25-19 set victory with a Mihacevich kill and Torres block.

Next up for Cleveland State will be Horizon League play, with the Vikings set to host Northern Kentucky in a two-match series next weekend (September 27-28).
