Cleveland State Softball Downs Detroit Mercy for Fifth Straight Win

Box Score

Detroit, MI-The Cleveland State softball team defeated Detroit Mercy Friday afternoon 3-1 to earn a fifth consecutive victory and move to 9-4 in Horizon League play and 13-16 overall.

All of the scoring came by way of the long ball, as all four runs were scored on home runs. Becky Hurosky and Emma Gilkerson supplied the two Cleveland State homers, with the lone Detroit Mercy run coming on a Jada Davis solo shot.

Melissa Holzopfel was stellar for the Vikings in the circle going the distance to earn the win and move to 10-6 on the season. Holzopfel tied her career high with 15 strikeouts in the contest. She surrendered just two hits and two walks over her seven innings of work. Holzopfel struck out eight of the first ten batters she faced.

Hurosky got the scoring started quickly as she delivered a two-run shot over the right field fence to put Cleveland State up 2-0. Gilkerson followed with a solo shot in the fourth to make it 3-0.

Davis put the Titans on the board with her solo shot in the bottom of the fourth, but Holzopfel allowed only one baserunner the rest of the way to deny any hope for a comeback.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow afternoon for a doubleheader to close the weekend series. The Vikings will look for a fourth league series win in five tries with at least a split in tomorrow's games. The first pitch of game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
