Cleveland State Softball Drops Finale at Charleston Invitational

Charleston, SC-The Cleveland State softball team wrapped up the Charleston Invitational Sunday morning, falling 6-2 to East Carolina in the finale of a five-game opening weekend tournament. The Vikings finished 2-3 on the weekend and will next compete at the NC State Wolfpack Classic in two weeks. 

ECU scored single runs in the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead. The Vikings struck back single runs in the third and fourth to tie the score back up. Brooke Albaugh tallied her sixth RBI of the weekend with a single in the third inning to score Jenna Deang to make it 2-1. Kiera Frascone reached on an error in the fourth to score the second run and tie the score.

The two teams were scoreless until the seventh, when ECU used four hits and two Cleveland State errors to put four runs on the board. Cleveland State put two runners aboard in the bottom of the seventh but could not push a run across. 

Melissa Holzopfel suffered her first loss of the season, yielding four earned runs in a complete game performance. Holzopfel finished with a 1.83 ERA in 23 innings of work over the opening weekend.

Cleveland State opens the NC State Wolfpack Classic on Friday, February 23 where the Vikings will play five more games against Iona, Appalachian State, UAlbany and host NC State.
