Cleveland State Men’s Basketball Earns First #HLMBB Win at Green Bay

Green Bay, WI-The Cleveland State men's basketball team picked up its second road win and its first in conference play dispatching Green Bay by a final score of 83-61. The Vikings controlled the game throughout, leading for over 32 minutes and pulling away late to split the first two games of conference play on the road in Wisconsin. The Vikings improve to 5-6 overall and 1-1 in league play while Green Bay falls to 2-8 and 0-2.

Cleveland State recorded its season high in three-point field goals made as the Vikings connected on 10 three-point tries for a 43 percent clip. Cleveland State was also rock solid at the free throw line finishing the game at 19-for-21 for a 90 percent total.

Four Vikings finished in double figures led by Je'Shawn Stevenson who finished with a career-high 20 points. Stevenson shot 50 percent from the field and connected on 3-of-7 from beyond the three-point arc. He finished 5-for-6 from the free throw line.

Tevin Smith scored 16 points, with 14 coming in the second half to help the Vikings widen the lead. Smith's basket at the 16:57 mark of the second half was his 1,000th career point. He finished 5-for-10 from the floor and made all six of his free throw attempts.

Chase Robinson added 15 points and Dylan Arnett finished with 11. Robinson was 4-of-8 from the field and a scorching 3-of-5 from three-point range. Arnett also shot 50 percent from the floor and was perfect at the charity stripe, as well as leading the team with seven rebounds.

Every one of the ten Cleveland State players to see action in the game scored at least two points. The Vikings finished with a 32-27 edge on the glass and won the turnover battle forcing 19 Green Bay turnovers. Cleveland State also had the edge in points in the paint with 28 and handily won the bench scoring category with 45 points coming from off the bench, the second highest output of the season.

The Vikings took control in the early going as a 9-3 run over four minutes of game action broke a 2-2 tie and gave Cleveland State an 11-5 lead at the 13:27 mark of the first half.

Green Bay responded with a 10-0 run, its largest of the game, to erase the deficit and jump in front 15-11. The run lasted four minutes and gave the Phoenix a four-point lead at the 9:17 mark.

Cleveland State quickly worked back to a tie and the Vikings dominated the final six minutes of first half action. CSU outscored Green Bay 20-7 over the final six minutes and change to carry a double-digit lead into the halftime break. Each one of Cleveland State's three freshmen hit key shots throughout the run, as Stevenson, Reece Robinson and Chaz Watson each connected on three-point attempts to widen the lead. The Vikings fed off the offensive energy and strung together stops on the defensive end as CSU held the Phoenix scoreless for three minutes at the tail end of the half. A Chase Robinson three-pointer with seven seconds left added an exclamation point to the run and gave the Vikings a 37-24 lead at the half.

The Cleveland State lead remained in double digits the rest of the way as the Vikings pulled away in the second half. The CSU lead grew as large as 29 points on a Stevenson triple with 3:41 to play. A late Green Bay surge was too little, too late as the Vikings cruised to the finish line with a 22-point victory.

Cleveland State returns to non-conference play next week following a break for final exams. The Vikings host Brescia on Saturday, December 14 to kick off a run of five straight home games.
