Cleveland State Volleyball Falls To Kent State In Five Sets

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State volleyball team opened its final weekend of non-league play Thursday evening, dropping a five-set match to Kent State.

Liberty Torres and Laken Voss led the Viking offense with 14 kills each, while Nia Hall added eight kills.

Karly Klaer finished with 39 assists and 17 digs along with a team-best seven blocks.

Emma Walker tallied 30 digs to lead the Viking defense.

As a team, the Vikings combined for 15.0 total blocks, including six from JeriLynn Koehler and four from Hall.

Cleveland State recorded 11 service aces on the match, including five from Reilly Wadden.

The Vikings carried all the momentum during the opening set, as they jumped out to a 5-0 lead on a Laken Voss kill, before extending their lead to 12-5 on a Nia Hall and Karly Klaer block.

Cleveland State went on to hold a sizable advantage throughout the rest of the frame, closing out the 25-14 first set victory with back-to-back points on a JeriLynn Koehler kill and Kent State error.

Despite Kent State responding with a second-set win, the Vikings were able to once again get the momentum on thasdfasdfeir side, picking up a 25-11 victory in the third frame.

The Vikings opened the set with an 8-2 lead, before extending their advantage to 14-7 on a Liberty Torres kill. Cleveland State then gained a 20-10 lead on a Reilly Wadden service ace, before another Wadden ace and a Koehler and Klaer block put the Vikings up 22-10.

Cleveland State then closed out the frame with back-to-back points on a Voss kill and an Ayva Leon service ace, gaining the 2-1 edge in the match.

Kent State responded with a win in set four, forcing a fifth and deciding set in which they picked up a 15-10 victory.

The Vikings will close out non-league play tomorrow, traveling to Akron for a 6:00 p.m. contest.
