Cleveland State Volleyball Earns 3-1 Victory At Robert Morris

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The Cleveland State volleyball team got back in the win column Tuesday evening, picking up a 3-1 victory at Robert Morris.

Laken Voss led the Vikings with 17 kills on the match, while Lydia Latimer added 12 kills.

Audrey McConihe led the defense with 23 digs, while Sarah DeGeorge added 15 and Karly Klaer chipped in 12.

As a team, the Vikings combined for eight service aces against RMU, including two from Emma Walker and Voss.

Cleveland State combined for 15.0 total blocks, paced by Madison Olinger and Madalynn Butler who both recorded seven total blocks.

After dropping a tight first set, the Vikings responded with a convincing 25-13 win in the second frame to even the match at 1-1.

Cleveland State was able to earn an early 7-2 lead following six straight points, before extending its advantage to 12-5 a few plays later following a Lydia Latimer kill and Laken Voss service ace. The Vikings then used another stretch of four straight points to gain a double-digit lead at 17-7 after a pair of Madalynn Butler kills and a Butler and Madison Olinger block.

The two teams then traded points over the next stretch, until the Vikings posted the final three points of the frame, on a pair of kills from Voss and Madison Quirino and an RMU error.

After a back-and-forth start to the third set, the Vikings were able to gain a 14-10 lead midway through the frame on an Emma Walker service ace, before extending their lead to 16-11 just a few plays later. RMU was then able to work its way back into the set, coming within one point at 17-16, before a 3-0 run from the Vikings extended their lead to 20-16 on an Olinger and Butler block.

Cleveland State then went on to post four of the final five points, capturing a 25-19 third set victory on a string of three Voss kills.

The two teams played a tightly contested fourth set until late in the frame, as Cleveland State was finally able to distance itself with a 4-0 run to gain a 23-19 edge on a Latimer kill. The Vikings then gained their first match-point on an RMU error, before gaining a second match point on a Quirino kill.

Cleveland State was then able to capture the 3-1 victory with a Butler kill, evening its Horizon League record at 2-2 on the season.
