Cleveland State Volleyball Falls To Wright State In Regular Season Finale

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State volleyball team closed out the regular season Saturday, dropping a 3-1 decision against Wright State.

Saturday's match marked Senior Day for the duo of Erica Kostelac and Lindsey Tout, as Kostelac finished with a Cleveland State career-high 21 kills and four blocks, while Tout posted five digs and three service aces.

Along with Kostelac, London Portis also tallied double-digit kills finishing with 11, while Keanna Avery added seven.

Abby Miller recorded 36 assists on the game, along with five digs and two blocks.

Emma Walker led the Viking defense with 14 digs, while Sarah DeGeorge tallied 13 and Audrey McConihe posted 11.

As a team, the Vikings combined for 12 total blocks, led by Ainslie McLaughlin with six and the trio of Lydia Latimer, Kostelac and Portis with four.

The Vikings were able to begin the match with a 25-20 victory in the first set, jumping out to a 1-0 lead over one of the top teams in the Horizon League. After trading points throughout the first part of the set, the Vikings were able to gain a 17-13 advantage following five straight points. During this stretch the Vikings got points off of a pair of Portis kills, two blocks and a McConihe service ace.

The Vikings were able to hold at least a two-point lead throughout the rest of the frame then, and closed out the set on a 5-2 run, capped off by a pair of Kostelac kills and two Tout service aces.

The Raiders then responded with a 25-14 victory during the second set to even the match.

During the third frame, the Vikings trailed midway through at the 16-10 mark, but slowly worked their way back into the set with a 5-1 run to bring the score to 17-15 following three straight Kostelac kills. The Raiders answered with four straight points to extend their lead once again at the 21-15 mark, but Cleveland State once again bounced back with a 4-1 run to close the gap to 22-19 on a McLaughlin and Portis block.

The Vikings were then able to hold off one set point with a Portis kill, but Wright State was able to close out the 25-23 victory during the third frame.

The Raiders would then go on to pick up a 25-21 victory during the fourth set, picking up the 3-1 victory.

Cleveland State finished regular season play with an 8-21 record, including a 6-12 mark in #HLVB play.
