Late Rally By Vikings Falls Just Short at Akron

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

AKRON, Ohio - Cleveland State's seventh inning rally fell just short as the Vikings dropped a 6-5 decision at Akron in the first game of a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. CSU also fell in the nightcap, 3-0.

The losses drop the Vikings to 21-24 this season, while the Zips improved to 22-24.

Cynthia Woodard drove in two runs in the opener, raising her league-leading total to 46 and moving within one RBI of tying Dara Toman's single season school record of 47 RBI in 2012.

Hannah Yoe had two of CSU's seven hits in the opener.

In game one, Akron took a 6-0 lead with three runs in the first, another tally in the third and two more runs in the fourth.

The Vikings rallied in the fifth for four runs to cut the deficit to 6-4. Alyson Broschk and Yoe led off the inning with singles and were sacrificed to second and third on a bunt from Alisha Silva. After Emma Nicholas drew a walk to load the bases, the Zips recorded the second out of the inning before Nena Doran delivered an RBI single for CSU's first run of the afternoon.

Susan Knight reached on an Akron error with Yoe scoring and Woodard followed with a two-run single to bring the Vikings within 6-4.

Katlind Phillips had a one out double in the seventh and would score on an RBI single from Knight, but the Vikings could not muster the tying run as the Zips held on to win game one.

In game two, CSU was limited to just three hits - singles by Doran, Yoe and Mel Woodard - as Sara Pearson worked a complete game to earn the win for Akron.

The Zips scored two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth which proved to be enough for Akron to earn the sweep.

CSU returns to action on Wednesday (April 29) when the Vikings host Detroit for a doubleheader in the final home games of the 2015 season. The first game is slated to begin at 2:00 p.m.
