Vikings Compete At 2014 Horizon League Championships

INDIVIDUAL RESULTS | TEAM SCORES

KENOSHA, Wis. – The Cleveland State cross country team competed at the 2014 Horizon League Championships Saturday morning, led by sophomore Ashlyn Woods who became the first-ever All-League honoree under head coach Joe Jaketic.

"I am very pleased with everyone's performance today, they all did a great job and competed until the very end," head coach Joe Jaketic said. "Ashlyn ran a great race, keeping her pace throughout the entire course and sticking to her plan. Marissa, Katie, and Samantha all did a great job of running together and pushing each other. They have all done a fantastic job of working hard and pushing their limits during practice throughout the season and they are seeing the benefits when it comes time for competitions."

Woods, who finished eighth overall to earn Second Team All-Horizon League honors, recorded a career-best 6K time of 22:17. Not only was the time her personal-best, but it also marked the best 6K time for a Viking over the past 10 seasons. At the 5K split, Woods recorded a time of 18:35 – both a career-best and the best 5K time for CSU under Jaketic.

Cleveland State's next three finishers all recorded top-50 places - and finished within six seconds of each other. Marissa Ward, who was running in just the second 6K of her career, posted a time of 23:40 to finish 41st, while Samantha Butterbaugh placed 42nd with a time of 23:42, and Katie Webb recorded a 23:46 6K time and a 45th place finish. All three times were career-best marks for the respective runners, while they were also top-15 6K times over the past 10 seasons.

The trio also had a sub 20-minute 5K split, crossing the 5K mark as a group in a time of 19:45.

Alanna Shamrock, Megan O'Keefe, and Erin Pavick rounded out CSU's top-seven runners – Shamrock recording a time of 24:56 (72nd), O'Keefe marking a career-best with a time of 25:28 (78th), and Pavick finishing in a time of 25:58 (85th).

Also running at the championships, but not counting towards Cleveland State's team score were; Sierra Swigert (26:01/PR), Emily Marshall (26:22/PR), Sarah Mallow (27:05), and Ashley Lydic (27:25).

As a team, the Vikings finished ninth at the 2014 Horizon League Championships.

Cleveland State's final race of the season will be the NCAA Regional, which will be held in Madison, Wis. on Friday, November 14.
