Dayton, Ohio- Although they held a lead through four innings in both games Saturday, the Cleveland State Vikings were unable to come away with a victory, dropping two Horizon League contests to the Wright State Raiders, 6-3 and 6-5 respectively.
The Vikings ended the weekend 10-13 on the year and are 1-2 in league play.
Despite a three run outburst in the first inning of game one, the Vikings were unable to bring any more runners across the plate, falling by that 6-3 final.
CSU used a two out rally in that first inning to generate its offense. With back to back fly outs by Cynthia Woodard and Katelind Phillips leading off the frame, Erica McNew finally got the offense going with two outs. McNew started things off with a single to the pitcher to get to first. Dara Toman then knocked a single to third to put two runners on base for Caila Ferro. Ferro didn't waste that chance as she blasted her first home run of the year to give the Vikings that 3-0 lead.
With a 3-0 CSU lead heading into the third inning Wright State started to come back. After a single from Taylor Knore to score Hanna Floyd in the third inning to cut the deficit to 3-1, the Raiders used a five-run sixth inning outburst to pull off the win.
The Raiders used three hits, including back to back singles from Alanna Williams and Lindsay Barrett, coupled with two Cleveland State errors to push across the five runs giving them the win.
Woodard, Alisha Silva, and Janessa Rivera-Keahi all also picked up hits for Cleveland State in game one, with Woodard doubling in the third inning and Silva and Rivera-Keahi each picking up a single.
Unfortunately for the Vikings they also fell again in game two of the doubleheader, a 6-5 nail biter.
The second game was a flip of the first, as this time it was Wright State that got out to the early lead. Hanna Floyd scored on a wild pitch after getting on base with a one out single to give Wright State the 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Despite the deficit, Cleveland State responded with four-run third inning to jump in front. Freshman Alyson Broschk started things off with a single for the Vikings, that hit was followed by Janessa Rivera-Keahi reaching base with one out due to a fielding error. Cynthia Woodard then continued the streak of runners on base for CSU as she moved to first on a fielder's choice.
With the bases loaded and one out Katelind Phillips did the damage, hitting a double to center field to score two runs. Woodard and Phillips later scored the final two runs of the inning for CSU as Woodard scored on a fielder's choice and Phillips scored on a passed ball to get the four run total.
Rivera-Keahi concluded the Vikings' scoring for the day as she knocked a solo homer out of the park in the fifth inning. The shot was her first homer of the year.
Cleveland State will be back in action next week as they head to Green Bay for a three game Horizon League series Saturday and Sunday.
