BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Cleveland State volleyball team dropped its first match of the season Friday evening, falling to Indiana in four sets at the Indiana Invitational. The Vikings are now 4-1 on the season, while the Hoosiers improve to 4-0.
Set scores against the Hoosiers were; 23-25, 25-19, 14-25, 24-26.
"Tonight we just weren't on our game, and Indiana was able to capitalize on a lot of our mistakes," head coach Chuck Voss said. "I thought we came out strong in each of the four sets, but we just weren't able to hold on to a lead especially during the third and fourth sets. We have a quick turnaround now to tomorrow's matches and hopefully we will be able to come in with a fresh start and play Cleveland State volleyball."
Kerry Winchester (13) and Kara Koch (14) combined for 27 of Cleveland State's 48 kills on the night, while Annie Djukic and Jackie Dabbelt each added six. Amanda Medvetz notched her fifth double-digit dig match of the year with a team-high 14 digs, while Brittany Holland recorded 10.
After dropping the first set the Vikings rebounded to take the second frame, 25-19. CSU got out to an early 10-4 lead and held the advantage for the remainder of the set. The Vikings gained a seven-point lead at the 20-13 mark with a back-to-back kills from Koch and Maggie Hannon and then cruised to the six point victory.
Despite holding early leads in both the third and fourth sets the Vikings were not able to hold on, as the Hoosiers used 20 kills from Jordan Haverly and 14 from Kelci Marschall to claim the four-set victory.
The Vikings will continue play at the Indiana Invitational tomorrow (Saturday, Sept. 1), with two matches against Georgia Tech and Bowling Green. CSU will face Georgia Tech at 10:00 a.m. and Bowling Green at 5:00 p.m. Live stats will be available for both matches on CSUVikings.com.
