CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State volleyball team concluded the 2012 regular season Thursday evening, posting a 3-0 sweep over the Youngstown State Penguins. With the victory, CSU ends the regular season with a 21-6 overall record and a 13-1 mark in league play, while the Penguins fall to 15-13 (5-9).

"I thought we played extremely well tonight, I was very pleased with our ball control throughout the entire match," head coach Chuck Voss said. "Dayna did a fantastic job of running the offense and the difference in the match was definitely our blocking and defense."

Set scores against YSU were 25-12, 25-18, 25-16.

Offensively, the Vikings were led by the senior duo of Kara Koch and Marie Frease, Koch with 18 kills on a .447 hitting percentage (18-1-38) and Frease with 11 kills on a .688 clip (11-0-16). Kerry Winchester also tallied eight kills, while Maggie Hannon added seven. CSU had five players notch double-digit digs against YSU, led by Amanda Medvetz with 14.Nikki Holmes (12), Koch (12), Brittany Holland (11) and Dayna Roberts (11) were the other four, while Holmes also added a career-high four service aces.

With her third dig of the second set, Koch became the 15th Viking to record 1,000 digs on their career, and the fifth Viking to notch 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs. Koch ended the match with 1,005 career digs, just shy of cracking the top-10 all-time list at CSU.

After cruising to a 25-12 victory during the first set, CSU had to battle during the second frame, coming out on top of the 25-18 decision. The Penguins stayed within four points of the Vikings throughout the first part of the frame, until the 14-9 mark when CSU posted four straight points. During this stretch CSU got points off of kills from Frease and Koch and two YSU errors.

Cleveland State held a sizeable lead for the remainder of the set, posting five of the final six points. The Vikings close out the frame with a Koch kill and back-to-back kills from Hannon.

The third set was much like the first, as Cleveland State came away with a 25-16 victory. The Vikings got out to an early 10-3 lead, and held the advantage for the remainder of the frame. The Penguins were able to make a late push, but it would fall short as CSU closed the frame with Koch's 18th kill of the match.

"We are going to practice the next couple days and hopefully get everyone healthy before next weekend," Voss said. "We have some players that are banged up right now, so we will do our best to get everyone playing at 100% came next weekend."

The Vikings will now have over a week off from competition, before beginning play in the 2012 Horizon League Championship. CSU, who will be hosting the tournament (Nov. 16-Nov. 18), will take the court for the first time in a semifinal contest on Saturday, November 17.
