INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -
Shalonda Winton posted 20 points for the first time this season and the fifth time on her career, but the Cleveland State women's basketball team fell short at Butler, dropping a 67-43 Horizon League contest Saturday afternoon. CSU is now 6-8 on the season and 1-2 in league play, while the Bulldogs improve to 6-9 (2-2).
Along with her 20 points, Winton tallied seven rebounds, six steals and nine assists while Takima Keane added nine points for the Vikings.
The Vikings got out to a 13-2 lead at the 14:22 mark of the first half, as they held Butler scoreless from the field until 13:51 when Sarah Hamm posted the Bulldogs' first field goal of the game. Over the next six minutes Butler went on an 18-8 run, taking their first lead of the game at the 6:56 mark (22-21). Following a pair of Butler turnovers, Winton regained the lead for CSU (23-22), converting a layup at the 5:50 mark before the Bulldogs closed the half on an 11-3 run going into halftime with a 34-26 lead.
The Bulldogs opened the second half on an 11-4 run over the first 5:30 to extend their lead to 14 points at 44-30. Butler would lead by at least 15 for the rest of the contest, as they held CSU to just 13 points over the final 15 minutes of play, outscoring the Vikings 33-17 during the second frame.
The Bulldogs had three players in double-figures Saturday afternoon, led by Hamm who tallied 14. Devin Brierly (13) and Jenna Cobb (11) also scored in double-digits for Butler.
The Vikings will return to the Wolstein Center next weekend for their first Horizon League contests at home, as CSU hosts UIC on Thursday (Jan. 12) and Loyola on Saturday (Jan. 14). Thursday's game will tip at 7:00 p.m., while Saturday's contest is set for a 2:00 p.m. start.
