KENT, Ohio - The Vikings entered their match on Tuesday night at Kent State having played just three sets in four of their last five matches. Their non-conference contest with the Golden Flashes would need to go the distance - and then some - for host KSU to claim victory.

Kent State won the match, 20-25, 25-20, 25-17, 21-25 and 19-17. With the loss, the Vikings slide to 5-3 while the Golden Flashes improve to 5-4.

The fifth set was wild with Kent State leading 12-9. Cleveland State took four of the next six points to trail by a score of 14-13, and KSU actually thought they had the match won after a ball caromed out of bounds. A late whistle by the official gave the point to Cleveland State and deadlocked the deciding game at 14.

The Vikings took the next point to take a 15-14 lead and had a chance to clinch the match, but Kent State won the next two points before Cleveland State tied it again at 16. The Golden Flashes won the next point and were staring at another opportunity to end the match, but the resilient Vikings tied it at 17.

Kent State won the last two points to win the set and the match.

Cleveland State's Kara Koch finished with a match-high 21 kills, while Jackie Dabbelt with 15 and Kerry Winchester with 11 were the only other Vikings to finish with double-digit kills. Jordan Goad handed out 50 assists

Kent State's Jenny Buczek had 16 kills to lead a well-balanced attack that saw four other Golden Flashes record at least eight kills.

Cleveland State will host a tournament this weekend, and will compete three times in two days. The Vikings battle DePaul on Friday (Sept. 9) at 7:00 p.m. and then IPFW at 1:00 p.m. and Duquesne at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday (Sept. 10).
