FAIRBORN, Ohio - Behind a career-high 13 kills from junior Marie Frease and 12 kills from junior Kara Koch, the Cleveland State volleyball team was able to record their second straight Horizon League victory as the Vikings swept Wright State, 3-0. With the win CSU is now 9-4 (2-0 HL) on the season, while the Raiders fall to 2-10 (1-1 HL).
Set scores were; 25-15, 25-17, 25-20.
"It was great for us to be able to get two league wins this weekend, and it gives us a lot of momentum going forward throughout the remainder of the league schedule," head coach Chuck Voss said. "We have plenty to work on as we move forward, but I am very happy with how we played overall this weekend.
After taking the first set, 25-15, the Vikings opened the second frame with a commanding 8-3 lead, including five straight points to start the set. Included in those five points were two service aces and a kill from Megan Barhorst and a kill from Koch. CSU controlled the frame from that point on, and despite the Raiders holding off three set points, the Vikings were finally able to put the set away with a Wright State error.
After trading points to open the third and final set, the Vikings were able to record four straight points off of kills from Koch, Frease and Jordan Goad to gain a 15-9 advantage. CSU would have to hold off a battling Wright State team for the remainder of the set, as the Vikings earned the 25-20 victory.
Goad recorded 32 assists for the Vikings, as Amy Grabiec had a team-high 12 digs. The trio of Goad, Frease and Barhorst led CSU's blocking efforts as they each posted three block assists, while Barhorst also added four service aces on the day.
CSU will be back in action Friday, September 23 as the Vikings travel to Youngstown State to continue Horizon League play. Friday's match will begin at 7:00 p.m. with live video available on CSUVikings.com.
