INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Cleveland State volleyball team opened up Horizon League play Friday evening with a 3-0 sweep of the Butler Bulldogs. With the win, the Vikings improve to 8-4 on the season and 1-0 in league play.
Set scores were; 25-19, 26-24, 25-22.
"This was a great way for us to open league play this evening," head coach Chuck Voss said. "Kara had a strong match offensively for us and we were able to spread out the defense. We will need to continue this level of play tomorrow when we face Wright State."
Kara Koch led the Viking offense as she tallied a match-high 17 kills, including six in both the first and second sets. Jordan Goad recorded 40 assists, while the trio of Amanda Medvetz (14), Brittany Holland (13) and Amy Grabiec (11) led the CSU defense.
After controlling the first set, the Vikings and the Bulldogs traded points during the second frame until Marie Frease and Koch each posted a kill to earn the 26-24 victory for Cleveland State.
The third set was much of the same until the end of the frame, when the Vikings posted four of the last seven points to take the 25-22 win. During that span, Jackie Dabbelt recorded two kills, while Kerry Winchester posted a kill and Koch recorded a service ace.
CSU continues Horizon League play Saturday (Sept. 17) as the Vikings will play a 4:00 p.m. contest at Wright State. Live stats and live video will be available on CSUVikings.com.
