SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Two second half goals from Santa Clara pushed the Broncos past Cleveland State, 2-0, on Sunday (Sept. 11) evening. With the loss, the Vikings wound up 1-1 on their west coast trip after knocking off San Jose State on Friday (Sept. 9) night.
"It was frustrating because we very well could have gone 2-0," said head coach Ali Kazemaini. "We had opportunities to take this game and didn't capitalize. Santa Clara is a good team though, and I'm proud of the kids because its certainly not easy to fly across the country and win, but that's why we play in these types of games."
On Sunday evening, both squads managed five shots in the first half but neither was able to get on the scoreboard in the first 45 minutes.
It wasn't until the 59th minute that Santa Clara's Mykell Bates was able to give Santa Clara a 1-0 lead. Bates tallied his second goal of the season when he knocked in a header off a corner kick from Brandon Zimmerman.
"On the first goal, we were in the right positions," Kazemaini said. "Ultimately their kid just made a play off their set piece. But after we fell behind, we had four more opportunities, and they were legitimate chances, to tie the game. Unfortunately we couldn't convert tonight."
With the outcome still very much in doubt, Santa Clara's Erik Hurtado provided the clincher when he scored with 2:11 remaining. Hurtado fired eight shots - five of them on goal - at CSU goalkeeper Brad Stuver. Aside from the five shots on goal from Hurtado, only two other Broncos had a lone shot on goal.
Stuver made five saves in the loss which dropped Cleveland State to 2-2 on the young year.
The Vikings finished with five shots on goal, all of them coming from different players.
Cleveland State will return home before flying down to North Carolina to battle Wake Forest on Wednesday (Sept. 14) at 7:00 p.m. The Demon Deacons are 1-2-1 so far in 2011, having scored two goals in their four games. The match on Wednesday will be the fifth consecutive home contest for Wake Forest. In comparison, the Vikings won't play their home opener until Sunday (Sept. 18) when they host Robert Morris.
