CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State men's tennis team split a pair of matches this weekend, earning a 4-3 win at Duquesne on Friday night and falling at home to Illinois State, 5-2, on Sunday at the Paramount Tennis Club.
The split moves CSU to 5-5 this spring.
"I thought we had a good weekend, even though we were not able to come away with a sweep of the two matches," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "This team is really starting to take shape as we head toward the league schedule which starts this weekend and that is a good sign.
"Our doubles is coming into form and I am seeing improvement every time we take the court. We were able to get the doubles point against Duquesne and that turned out to be the key in that win. And although we didn't play our best doubles against ISU, I continue to see the potential and the guys are playing hard every point."
Matt Kuelker (No. 2), Chris Klepatz (No. 3) and Jay Jones (No. 6) picked up singles wins against the Dukes to clinch the win for CSU.
Yannick Goossens and Rob Fox, who occupied the top singles spots in the lineup against Illinois State, were the lone Vikings to win on Sunday in singles.
CSU is back in action on Saturday (March 5) when the Vikings open Horizon League play with an 8:00 p.m. match at Youngstown State.
