YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The Cleveland State women's basketball team opened Horizon League play Saturday afternoon, as they fell at Youngstown State, 70-48. The Vikings were led by Shalonda Winton who tallied her fourth double-double of the season with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Imani Gordon also scored in double-figures for CSU, posting 14 points on a 5-for-8 performance.

With the loss, CSU falls to 5-7 on the season and 0-1 in league play, while Youngstown State is now 7-5 and 1-0.

At the 6:02 mark of the first half CSU fell behind 30-14, but the Vikings were able to post four straight points on a pair of Winton free throws and a Gordon jumper to bring the score to 30-18. Cleveland State closed the first half on an 8-5 run, including the four points from Winton and Gordon, to go into halftime down 35-22.

After YSU opened the second half on a 9-4 run, CSU posted eight straight points to come within 10 (44-34) with 13:30 left to play. During that span CSU got four points from Winton, two from Cori Coleman and two from Gordon.

CSU was able to hold the Penguins scoreless for a five-minute stretch, but with a 6-0 run that started at the 12:19 mark, Youngstown State was able to extend their lead to 16 (50-34) at the 10:28 mark.

A Coleman three-pointer on the following possession and a Winton jumper one-minute later, allowed the Vikings to close the gap to 11 points at 50-39, but that would be as close as CSU would get for the rest of the contest. During the last nine minutes of the game, CSU managed just eight more points, as they were outscored 20-8 by the Penguins, as YSU came away with the 70-48 victory.

With her 13 rebounds Saturday, Winton now ranks 14th all-time on the CSU career rebounds list with 575.

Destinee Blue added eight points for the Vikings, while Coleman posted seven points along with three steals.

The Penguins were led by preseason Horizon League Player of the Year Brandi Brown, who tallied 23 points and 12 rebounds. Heidi Schlegel and Monica Touvelle also scored in double-figures, posting 16 and 12 respectively.

The Vikings will continue Horizon League play next weekend, as CSU is set to travel to Valparaiso and Butler. Cleveland State will take on the Crusaders on Thursday (Jan. 5) at 8:05 p.m. EST and will then face Butler on Saturday (Jan. 7) at 2:00 p.m.
