MUNCIE, Ind. - The doubles tandem of Rob Fox and John Haley advanced to the final round of the Flight A bracket, and Chris Klepatz and Matt Ford advanced to the final round of the Flight B Consolation bracket, in the highlights of Cleveland State's men's tennis team's performance on the second day of the Ball State Invitational.
After a strong showing on the first day of the tournament, the Vikings struggled in singles competition. Five players lost on Saturday (Sept. 25), ending Cleveland State's participation in singles play.
"We struggled to win the close matches today, and we were disappointed with the results," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "We needed to play the big points better."
The Vikings' best singles match of the day came when Haley faced Butler's Stephen McGloughlin in the semifinal round of the Cardinal bracket. Haley took the first set 6-3, but fell in the next two 3-6 and 7-10.
Ford also took his quarterfinal match in the White Consolation bracket to three sets, falling to Illinois State's Mya Smith-Dennis in a 6-3, 2-6, 10-8 decision.
The Vikings hope to close out the tournament with a positive on Sunday.
"We still have a chance to win the A Doubles flight tomorrow," Etzkin said.
