TULSA, Okla. - Yannick Goossens won his first matchin the pre-qualifying draw at the All-American Classic on Saturday morning, but was later eliminated from the draw after losing his second round match.
Matt Kuelker and Rob Fox were both eliminated in their first match of the tournament.
"This tournament is always a good experience for our guys because each match is guaranteed to be against a quality opponent," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "There were some great moments by all three players today and hopefully they will be able to build upon this experience."
Goossens, who was making his second appearance in the prestigious tournament, defeated Vlad Marinescu of Wichita State, 6-4, 6-2, in the opening round of the draw. He fell later in the day to Chris Kearney of UC Irvine, 6-0, 6-3.
"Goose was the highlight of the day with his win in his first match," Etzkin said. "He was very patient and it was good to see him play like that. He just ran into a steamroller in the second match. His opponent played very well and not many people are going to beat Goose like that. But it was good to see him go out, play well and get that first win."
Fox dropped a three set match to Krzysztof Muzalewski of Old Dominion, 5-7, 7-5, 7-5.
Kuelker, a freshman who has played in just two collegiate tournaments this fall, fought hard but fell to Tyler Brown of Texas San Antonio, 6-2, 6-2.
"Rob had a chance to win his match today and get into the third round," Etzkin said. "He had five match points, but couldn't get it done and he was really disappointed with that. But that is only going to make him work harder and improve going forward."
"Matt was able to get a good experience out here as a freshman," Etzkin said. "This will only help him as he continues to grow and mature as a player."
The Vikings are now out of action until Oct. 21-25 when they compete in the ITA Regional Championships in South Bend, Ind.
