VALPARAISO, Ind. - Liz Fazio had 11 kills and Cleveland State hit .329 as the Vikings defeated Valparaiso, 3-0, on Saturday night in the Athleics Recreation Center in Horizon League action.
Match scores were 25-20, 25-13, 25-17.
The win improved CSU to 12-5 overall and 2-1 in league play, while Valpo fell to 8-6 overall (2-1 HL).
"This was a good win for us, especially after losing such a tough, emotional match last night," head coach Chuck Voss said. "I thought we did a good job staying in system and were able to take them out of their system. Valpo is a great team with a lot of talented players, so to be able to come out of there with a win was very important for us."
Beth Greulich finished with nine kills and five blocks, while Kara Koch had eight kills. Maggie Bonomini recorded a team-best 12 digs and Jordan Goad finished with 30 assists and five digs.
A Valpo service error gave CSU a quick 1-0 lead in the first set and they would not trail the rest of the way. The Vikings pushed their lead to 10-7 on a Crusader attack error, but Valpo battled back to pull even at 12-12. The teams continued to exchange points until CSU broke open a one point lead (19-18) by closing the match on a 6-2 run.
Valpo scored the first two points of the second set, but a 12-5 CSU run gave the Vikings a 12-7 lead on a Crusader attack error. The Vikings kept the heat on, closing the set on a 13-6 run to take a 2-0 lead.
The Vikings left little doubt about the sweep, taking a 22-9 lead in set three in claiming their ninth sweep of the season.
CSU will be back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 29, when CSU hosts Eastern Michigan at 7:00 p.m. in Woodling Gym.
