Vikings Roll Over St. Francis, 6-1

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- It was a victorious day for Cleveland State Viking Tennis on Saturday, as the men's team defeated St. Francis (PA), 6-1, for their first win of 2009.

St. Francis stayed competitive at every spot, but proved to be no match for the Vikings in the end. Riding the energy and intensity from a close loss with Stetson just two nights before, Cleveland State made some lineup changes and was able to take care of business at home.

CSU again came out strong in doubles play, going 3-0 to win the point. The pair of Aris Spirtos and Adam Perkins defeated their opponents 8-2. Both men also played close matches at the fifth and sixth singles spots. After losing his first set, Spirtos came back to win the match in a third set tiebreaker against Jeffrey Seevers. Perkins dropped a close match to Steven Child, losing 6-3, 7-6(5).

"St. Francis fought hard and gave our guys all we could handle," Cleveland State coach Brian Etzkin said. "This was a good win for us that we definitely had to earn every step of the way. We are looking forward to hopefully carrying this success into Sunday's match against St. Bonaventure."

The Vikings will host St. Bonaventure in another men/women double header on Sunday, Feb. 1. The men's team will start competition at 10:00 a.m followed by the women at 2:00 p.m.
