EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The Cleveland State men's tennis team dropped its first match of the 2009 spring season on Saturday afternoon, losing to Big Ten foe Michigan State, 5-2, at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
CSU came away with one of three doubles matches as the top duo of Ryan Hamning and Phil Orno defeated Austin Brooks and John Stratton, 8-6.
Orno continued his success at No. 1 singles, winning a close match against John Allare, 7-6(5), 6-4. Sophomore Robert Fox was the only other Viking to win a singles match, defeating Ronnie Hulewicz in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 10-7. Yannick Goossens also extended his match to three sets before falling at the No. 4 spot.
"As a team we played some very close matches against a very talented Big Ten team," said Jay Tee, Cleveland State assistant coach and former CSU standout. "Although we don't like to come out on the losing end, it gives us confidence that we can stay competitive with a team like Michigan State early in the season."
The Vikings dropped two exhibition matches to the Spartans to close out the match.
CSU will return to action when it hosts a dual match against Stetson on Thursday, Jan. 29, at 7:00 p.m.
