CHICAGO, Ill. - Katelyn Ciminelli had three hits and Amanda Macenko scattered just two hits in a complete game effort to lead the Vikings to a 4-1 victory over UIC on Sunday afternoon at Flames Field.
CSU won two out of three games this weekend and improved to 23-12 overall and 10-4 in the Horizon League. The Flames slipped to 18-26 overall (9-6 HL).
Macenko, who threw her 22nd complete game of the season, improved to 18-9 with a 1.50 earned run average this season. She allowed just one run on two hits and struck out four.
UIC jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first as leadoff hitter Sarah Clynes belted a homer to centerfield. However, the Flames would not get another hit off Macenko until the fifth inning when Melissa Marinacci singled through the right side.
The Vikings came back with three runs in the third to assume control of the game. Jessica Burt led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a single by Whitney Willard. Danielle Young followed with an RBI double and Amanda Houchin drove in the second run of the inning with an RBI groundout.
Christa Coppus then reached on a fielding error, stole second and moved to third on a single by Ciminelli. With runners on the corner, Ciminelli and Coppus executed the double steal with Coppus coming home with the third run of the inning.
CSU gave Macenko an insurance run in the fourth on a solo homerun to centerfield by Jessica Burt, her third of the season.
That was more than enough run support for Macenko, who retired the side in order in five of the seven innings as she walked just one batter.
Burt finished 2-for-2, while Willard also had two hits for CSU as the Vikings ended the afternoon with nine hits.
CSU will return to action on Tuesday (April 22) when the Vikings host IPFW for a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Viking Field.
