CHICAGO, Ill. - Whitney Willard, Danielle Young and Shalyn Adams drove in one run each and Amanda Macenko allowed two unearned runs as the Vikings topped UIC, 3-2, in the second game of their Horizon League doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Flames Field.

CSU is now 22-10 overall this season and 9-5 in league play, while UIC is 18-25 and 9-3 in the Horizon League.

The Flames won the opener, 7-1.

"We were fortunate to come away with a split today," head coach Angie Nicholson said. "We didn't hit well in the first game and four hits is never going to get it done. We played better in the second game, but still didn't do the things we are capable of doing."

In game two, Macenko fired her 21st complete game of the season, giving up just two unearned runs on nine hits. She struck out 10 while walking just one.

UIC scored single runs in the second and third innings to take an early lead. However, both runs came via errors by the CSU defense.

Forced to come from behind, the Vikings did just that as Young put the Vikings on the board with a solo homerun in the fourth. CSU then plated two runs in the fifth that proved to be the game-tying and game-winning runs.

Amy Powell led off the fifth with a double and moved to third on a groundout from Haley Keller. Powell came around to score on an RBI single by Adams.

Jessica Burt followed with a double to move Adams to third and Adams came in to score the game-winning run on a single by Willard.

The Vikings finished with 11 hits in the nightcap, including two each by Adams, Burt and Young.

In the opener, UIC pounded out 11 hits and scored five runs in the second inning to claim the win. Starter Sarah Clyde limited CSU to just four hits and fanned three in a complete game effort.

CSU took a quick 1-0 lead as Willard scored a run due to a Flames throwing error in the first. However, UIC came back with five runs in the second and two more in the third to gain a 7-1 lead.

Melissa Marinacci led off the bottom of the second inning with a single, which was followed by a double from Brooke Frydendall. Marinacci then knotted the game as she scored on a wild pitch by Macenko.

Claire Donyanavard drove in Frydendall on a single and advanced to second base on a wild throw to first base. Ashlee Ackerman gave the Flames a 3-0 advantage on an RBI single short into left field and Nicole Robinson tacked on a two-run RBI to make it 5-1.

Sarah Clynes gave the Flames a 7-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning on a two-run RBI single.

Macenko took the loss in game one, lasting just two innings. She gave up five runs (four earned) on six hits. Brittany Bate worked the final four innings, giving up two unearned runs on five hits.

Willard finished with two hits in the opener.

The Vikings will conclude their three-game series at UIC on Sunday (April 20) with a 2:00 p.m. contest.
