KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Viking men traveled to Western Michigan to compete in the Jack Vredevelt Invitational, their last team tournament of the fall 2008 season.

Play began on Friday night with three rounds of doubles. The senior/freshman duo of Rob West and Yannick Goossens finished first in the Brown ("A") flight, winning three matches by a score of 8-6 against opponents from Wright State, Western Michigan, and DePaul.

"Rob and Yannick put forth a tremendous effort in the "A" flight," CSU head coach Brian Etzkin said. "The two of them have only just started playing together, and they have proven they can do big things for us at a high level. As a team we should be in really good shape for doubles this year."

Phil Orno paired with Chris Klepatz to finish 2-1 in the Gold "B" flight. Orno's usual partner, CSU doubles standout Ryan Hamning, was out of the tournament recovering from injuries.

The tournament's first two rounds of singles matches were held on Saturday. Sophomore Robert Fox was the only Viking to win his first round match, defeating Western Michigan's Zeyad Montasser, 6-4, 6-4. Fox's match, played early in the day, set the tone for his teammates.

Classmate Adam Perkins went 2-0 in the singles Round Robin Draw, including an exciting win over Bradley's Trevor McGrath, 6-2, 3-6, 10-6 (10-point super tiebreakers were used in place of a third set).

"Adam is playing good, disciplined tennis right now, and I was glad to see him put things together in this tournament," said Etzkin.

After losing in the first round, Klepatz came back to win his second match, fighting off three match points and winning his super tiebreaker against Jan Alafriz of Wright State.

Steven Wipprecht finished fifth in his flight and also fought back to win his breaker.

"Steven battled cramps in his second match and missed some opportunities early, but he was able to come back from being down 5-2 to win that breaker," Etzkin said. "Our singles play has been a bit shaky with a lot of ups and downs, but we are hoping to end on a positive note on Sunday."

The final round of singles matches will be played Sunday morning.
