TOLEDO, Ohio - Ryan Haming and Phil Orno completed a perfect weekend by winning all three matches that they each played in to lead Cleveland State to a second place finish at the Toledo Invitational.
CSU earned 7.5 out of a possible 11 points to finish second in the tourney behind Duquesne's 9.5 points. Host Toledo was third with six points, Xavier was fourth with five points and Dayton was fifth with one point. Each team played three doubles matches and eight mini-singles contests during the weekend for a possible 11 points each.
"We played great as a team today," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "We played point to point today as if every point was a life-or-death matter and it showed in our success.
"We are off to a great start this season, but with our experience, I expect that. We are going to see each of these teams again this year so our performance this weekend will give us a base to work from."
After winning all three of their matches on Friday, Orno and Hamning were at it again on Saturday as each won a pair of singles matches and teamed for a doubles win. For the weekend, they each went 3-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles and played a part in CSU winning six of its 7.5 points.
"Phil and Ryan are leading by example right now," Etzkin said. "They have a great attitude on the court and by playing at the top of the lineup, they set the tone for our entire team."
The duo opened doubles play in the morning by shellacking the Dayton duo of James O'Connell and Michael Rohanna, 8-4. Orno went on to defeat Toledo's Jared Miller, 6-4, 6-2 and Rohanna from Dayton, 6-3, 6-2. Haming's path was even easier as he hammered Chris Clark from Toledo, 6-2, 6-2 before blitzing Dayton's Matt Sherman, 6-1, 6-1.
Etzkin also singled out the play of Rob Fox, who went 2-1 at No. 6 singles and 2-0 at No. 3 doubles. "He made tremendous strides since last week," Etzkin said. "He was the difference in us winning some crucial points.
The Vikings are back in action this week when they travel to Tulsa, Okla. to play in a three-day tourney that starts on Friday (Sept. 29) and runs through Sunday (Oct. 1).
