TOLEDO, Ohio - Phil Orno and Ryan Hamning won all three matches that they played in and Rob West and Robert Fox won both of their contests and the Vikings won three of their five mini-matches to highlight Cleveland State's play on the opening day of the Toledo Invitational.
The tournament, which features teams from Duquesne, Dayton, Toledo, Xavier and CSU, has each team splitting its singles lineup into three, three-player teams. Each school will play eight singles and three doubles contests for one point each (11 maximum).
"We came out to play today and it really showed in our performance," CSU head coach Brian Etzkin said. "We looked like we were in mid-season form in doubles when we started play this morning and even though both Xavier and Duquesne also played very well, we were able to split our two doubles matches.
"This format allows for our entire lineup to play against some pretty good regional competition. It will definitely help us prepare for league play," Etzkin added.
Action began at 9:00 a.m. on Friday with a pair of doubles matches. CSU routed Xavier, 3-0 but dropped a 2-1 decision to Duquesne. Orno and Hamning teamed up to win both of their No. 1 doubles matches, besting Herlinger and Matthews from Xavier, 8-5, and Duquesne's Mast and McLelland, 8-5.
In single play later in the day, CSU's "A" team edged Duquesne, 2-1 as Orno topped Mast at No. 1, 6-1, 6-1 and Hamning claimed the No. 2 singles contest over Ortega, 6-2, 6-1.
Cleveland State's third point came in the lone "B" singles contest as West and Fox won at No. 4 and No. 6, respectively to give the Vikings a 2-1 win over Dayton. West needed a super-tiebreaker to come back from being a set down to Dayton's Warnoch, 1-6, 6-3, 10-5 while Fox dominated Hartig, 6-4, 6-1.
Play continues with five singles and one doubles match on Saturday.
