CLEVELAND, Ohio - Stephanie Karst scored in the 77th minute to break open a 1-1 tie and give Canisius a 2-1 victory over Cleveland State on Sunday at Krenzler Field.

The loss drops CSU's record to 2-5 while the Golden Griffins improve to 1-4-1.

"I am disappointed," CSU head coach Derrek Falor said. "It took us until the second half to take the play to them (Canisius) and once we did, our offensive opportunities picked up.

"We have to take better advantage of playing at home against teams like Canisius, who match up to us pretty well and play a similar style of play. These are the matches that are going to decide how well we do when league play starts in a couple of weeks."

Canisius opened the scoring at the 12:31 mark when Amanda Janosky gathered in a loose ball at the top of the box and blasted a shot from the left side that went over the head and outstretched arms of CSU netminder Kelly Zinkiewich.

The Vikings evened the match in the 73rd minute when Sylvia Olsby fed a pass down the left side to Shayna Back, who blasted a shot from almost the exact spot as Janosky's goal, beating Golden Griffin goalie Daniella Pettinari to tie the contest at 1-1.

The tie was short-lived as the Golden Griffins scored the game-winning goal when Janosky fed Karst at the top of the box and Karst drilled a blast just inside the near side post at the 76:09 mark.

Cleveland State pressured offensively after that but was stymied at the 84:26 mark when sophomore Jessica Keefer received a red card, forcing the Viking to play the remainder of the match a player down.

Zinkiewich recorded five saves in goal for CSU while Pettinari made three for Canisius.

The Vikings return to action with a pair of matches this week, playing at Indiana State on Friday (Sept. 21) before returning home to host Cincinnati at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday (Sept. 23).
