Final Stats
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -
Cleveland State fell to 2-2 in the Horizon League with a 4-2 loss at Youngstown State on Tuesday afternoon. The Vikings, who are now 17-6 overall, lost despite out-hitting the Penguins, 8-5.
CSU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Whitney Willard singled to start the game, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a RBI single by Amanda Houchin.
YSU (7-8, 2-2 HL) made sure the lead was short-lived as Autumn Grove hit a two-run homer in the home half of the first.
CSU knotted the score in the third when Houchin led things off with a double and came in to score when Christa Coppus followed with a double.
Once again, the Penguins had an immediate answer in the form of another two-run shot -- this time by McKenzie Bedra.
Karlie Burnell earned the win for YSU, scattering eight hits to improve to 6-3.
Amanda Macenko (14-4) took the loss for the Vikings, giving up five hits and three earned runs while fanning four.
Houchin and Coppus each collected two hits to pace CSU.
"We just couldn't come up with a big hit when we needed it today," CSU head coach Angie Nicholson. "We were also hurt by our defense. We need to step things up a notch if we hope to be successful the rest of the season."
Cleveland State is in action again on Wednesday when the Vikings travel to Kent State for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
