LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Robert Fox won a pair of singles matches to advance to the consolation semi-finals and Ryan Hamning was eliminated in the "A" singles quarterfinals during play in the second day at the Louisville Invitational.
Viking players could manage only a 3-5 record in singles play on Saturday with only Fox remaining active in either of the three singles brackets.
Fox, who split his two singles contest on Friday, came back on Saturday morning to defeat Dayton's Bruce Warnock in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1 and followed that up with a 6-1, 6-0 rout of Austin Peay's Jay Wilkinson to advance to Sunday's consolation semifinals.
"Robert turned in a pair of strong efforts today," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "He didn't make too many mistakes or give away points and was real efficient. To allow just five points in two matches at this level speaks volumes of how he is playing right now."
The only other Viking to claim a singles win on Saturday was Adam Perkins, who routed Tennessee-Martin's Shuntaro Tsukiyama, 6-2, 6-2 in the consolation round of 16 before falling in the quarterfinals to Bradley's Richard Robertson, 6-1, 6-2.
Hamning, who had beaten a pair of opponents on Friday to advance to the quarterfinals of the main bracket, won his first set before falling to Abe Souza from Illinois, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, and be eliminated from the bracket.
"Ryan played pretty well today but ran into a strong opponent from Illinois," Etzkin said. "Still, this was a good tournament for him."
Play concludes in the tournament on Sunday with two Vikig doubles team taking part in a consolation match followed by Fox playing as many as two singles contests to complete the "B" singles consolation bracket.
