Five of Cleveland State's six starters hit .345 or better as the Vikings opened play in the UNC Asheville Volleyball Classic with a 30-21, 30-24, 30-27 victory over the host Bulldogs on Friday night (Sept. 1).
Senior middle hitter Danielle Siefker led the way for CSU (3-2) with 15 kills, a .684 hitting percentage and four blocks, while freshman outside hitter Liz Fazio added 14 kills and eight digs. Junior setter Mel Snyder tallied 44 assists, three aces, eight digs and four blocks and freshman opposite Beth Greulich hit .583 (8-1-12).
"We passed the ball well tonight and Mel put Danielle and Liz in good positions to be successful," CSU head coach Chuck Voss said. "I'm pleased to get off to such a good start, but we have to play better tomorrow if we hope to win the tournament."
The Vikings out-hit Asheville (.365 to .287) while holding advantages in aces (7-4), digs (36-26) and blocks (6-2) to end their two-match skid.
Alysha Greer paced the Bulldogs (1-5) with 12 kills.
Cleveland State concludes play in the Classic on Saturday with matches against East Tennessee State (10:00 a.m.) and UNC Greensboro (3:00 p.m.).
