CLEVELAND -
Cleveland State saw its 10-game home winning streak come to an end with a 4-2, nine-inning loss to Oakland on Thursday afternoon at Viking Field. The defeat drops the Vikings to 34-11 overall, while the Golden Grizzlies even their record at 26-26.
Trailing 1-0 in the fourth inning, CSU knotted the score on a two-out RBI double by Kaitlin Guyette. The Vikings then moved ahead in their next at-bat on another two-out run-scoring double, this time by Grace Luginbuhl.
Oakland tied the score in the top of the sixth on Stephanie Zellner's two-out RBI single.
Neither team mounted much of a threat until the ninth, when the Grizzlies turned a leadoff walk, two singles and a pair of wild pitches into two runs.
Luginbuhl took the loss in 8.1 innings of work to fall to 21-7. She allowed eight hits and four runs (three earned), while fanning 10.
Laura Chomokos went the distance, scattering seven hits while striking out eight to improve to 18-11.
"I didn't think we played with our normal focus or energy level," CSU head coach Julie Jones said. "But give Oakland credit, the hung in there and came up with some big hits when it mattered. Today was frustrating, but hopefully we can get back to playing our game this weekend."
Horizon League-leading Cleveland State (13-5 HL) closes out the regular season with a three-game series against second-place Detroit (11-6 HL) on May 6-7 at Viking Field. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday with first pitch both days set for 1:00 p.m. The season finale will also serve as both Senior and Alumni Day. The Vikings can claim their first-ever league regular season title with a pair of wins this weekend.
