Final Stats
CANFIELD, Ohio -
Second-seeded Cleveland State was upset, 6-3, by No. 7 Wright State in the opening game of the 2006 Horizon League Championship on Thursday afternoon at McCune Park. The Vikings will face the loser of the No. 3 Detroit versus No. 6 Youngstown State contest in an elimination game later this evening.
The start of the contest was delayed for exactly four hours due to rain, but it took only one pitch for CSU (35-14) to commit a costly error that led to three unearned runs for the Raiders (7-39) in the top of the first inning. Kristen Farley provided the big hit in the frame with a two-out, two-run double.
Forced to play catch-up the rest of the game, the Vikings out-hit WSU 10-8, but could not come up with a big hit as they stranded seven runners.
"We played like this last week and it carried over into today's game," CSU head coach Julie Jones said. "Wright State took advantage of the opportunities we gave them and we failed to come up with a clutch hit when we needed it. Now we've got our work cut out for us."
Christa Coppus went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBI to lead CSU, while Grace Luginbuhl and Sarah Milosek each collected two hits.
Jacqueline Macy paced the Raider attack with three hits and three runs scored.
Amanda Cody went the distance for WSU, striking out six to improve to 2-13.
Luginbul fell to 22-10 after giving up four hits and four runs (one earned) in 2.2 innings of work.
