CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Vikings entered the fall portion of their schedule with a thin lineup and it showed in their 6-1 loss to Duquesne on Friday at the Malaga Tennis Center.

Cleveland State won its first doubles match with the duo of Jay Tee and Rob West who won easily, 8-1. The Vikings dropped a hard-fought No. 2 doubles match, 8-6. Dan Singer and Steven Wipprecht were defeated by Adam Townsand and Devon Peightal.

"We were right there in doubles," assistant coach David Howell said. "It was great to see that since we didn't work on doubles too much the last couple weeks."

The Vikings dropped five of their six singles matches, but Singer was the bright spot for CSU. Playing with a bad knee, Singer defeated Townsand, 6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-4.

"I thought Dan [Singer] played great for us today," Howell said. "He wasn't at 100 percent and his movement was limited, but he fought through a tough second set and he hung in there to take the third. What we got from him we need from everyone."

The Vikings shook up their lineup with some lingering injuries and a player who will not be joining the team until January.

"We had some guys who played higher in the lineup today," Howell said. "This is the time where everyone needs to step up and do their best with the chance they are getting to play."

The Vikings will be able to rest some of their players and practice on things they learned from the match as they don't compete again until Saturday, Oct. 8 when they travel to conference foe Youngstown State. The match will begin at 1:00 p.m.
