Final Stats

CLEVELAND - Cleveland State opened play in the 2005 Medical Mutual CSU Invitational with a convincing 30-25, 30-10, 30-21 victory over Binghamton on Friday night. The Vikings limited the Bearcats to a -.009 (30-31-109) hitting percentage to improve to 14-3 in the five-year history of the event.

Cleveland State (6-3) posted a .233 hitting percentage (40-16-103), while posting a season-high 15 blocks to just two for Binghamton (5-6).

"We played pretty well for most of the match and it was nice to get a lot of people playing time," CSU head coach Chuck Voss said. "We worked on blocking this week and we got much better tonight as the match went along. I'm looking for a little more offensive consistency out of us tomorrow."

Nickole Kennedy paced the Vikings with 11 kills, while Emily Clark tallied eight kills, 13 digs and five blocks. Jenna Maddocks chipped in with eight kills and eight digs and Jenni Ramminger led all players with a career-high seven blocks.

Katie Brodie had nine kills to lead the Bearcats, while Megan Hoag had a team-high nine digs.

Binghamton's 10 points in the second game tied a CSU opponent record for fewest points in a game since the NCAA went to the rally score format in 2001. The Vikings limited Canisius to just 10 points on Sept. 8, 2001 in the Medical Mutual CSU Invitational.

San Diego State swept Niagara, 30-24, 30-28, 30-27, in the tournament opener. Audra Dent and Melanie Green paced the Aztecs with nine kills each, while Aime Cordeiro tallied a match-high 19 digs. The Purple Eagles were led by Erin Graham and Stephanie Hopkins with eight kills apiece, while Micole Daluiso notched 16 digs.

The Invitational concludes with four matches on Saturday. Cleveland State will face Niagara at 1:00 p.m. and San Diego State in the finale at 7:00 p.m.
