CSU Men Win Horizon League Opener

CLEVELAND - With point guard Walt Chavis (Steelton, Pa./Steelton-Highspire) wheeling and dealing, Cleveland State dumped visiting UW-Green Bay 66-55 in the Vikings' Horizon League opener at Goodman Arena Thursday night.

Chavis - who is third in the league in assists (5.42/game) and second in steals (1.92/game) - dealt out a career-high 12 assists and notched four steals while committing just one turnover for the Vikings. The sophomore tied the seventh-best single-game effort in school history, equaling Craig Caldwell (vs. Eastern Illinois, 2-14-94), Lee Reed (vs. Akron, 2-8-83) and Jim Les (vs. Denison, 11-27-82 & vs. Xavier, 1-13-82).

Viking junior Jermaine Robinson (Philadelphia, Pa./Simon Gratz) led all scorers with 18 points while junior Modibo Niakate (Paris, France/Hutchinson C.C.) added 15.

For the Phoenix, Greg Babcock came off the bench to tally a double-double with a game-high 14 rebounds to go along with 16 points. UWGB also got 17 points from Brandon Hanson.

With Babcock leading the way, the Phoenix won the battle of the boards 40-24. Pape Badiane (les Ulis, France/Faith Christian Academy) and Tahric Gosley (Philadelphia, Pa./Simon Gratz) paced CSU with six boards each.
