CLEVELAND, Ohio (AP) - Theo Dixon hit a 3-pointer with 18 seconds left as
Cleveland State rallied from a four-point deficit in the final 1:47 to beat
Detroit 69-67 Saturday.
The Vikings (11-9, 3-2 Midwest Collegiate Conference) trailed 67-65 after
Terrell Riggs hit a foul shot with 34 seconds left before Dixon's shot gave the
Vikings a 68-67 lead. It was the only 3-point attempt Dixon made for the game
out of six tries.
Doc Taylor finished the scoring by hitting a foul shot with 3 seconds left.
Tahric Gosley led the Vikings with 15 points and nine rebounds. Jermaine
Robinson and Jamaal Harris had 13 points apiece for Cleveland State and Dixon
finished with 12 points.
Willie Green led the Titans (11-7, 2-2) with 16 points. Riggs, Marc Maruz
and Greg Grays had 10 points apeice. Riggs also pulled down 10 rebounds.
Detroit built a 41-31 lead with 17:11 remaining in the game on a jumper by
Green, but the Vikings responded with 11-0 run over the next four minutes to
take a 42-41 lead on a free throw by Gosley. No team was able to build a lead
bigger than four points for the rest of the game.
Detroit made five more baskets than Cleveland State, but was outscored at
the foul line 27-12.
Cleveland State shot 44 percent for the game, 20-46, to 39 percent for
Detroit, 25-65. In addition, the Vikings limited Rashad Phillips, the MCC's leading scorer at 19.4 ppg, to just eight points and no three-pointers on 2-of-14 shooting, ending his string of double-digit outings at 23.
