CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State women's tennis team capped off a perfect Horizon League regular season slate Saturday, picking up a 6-1 victory over Oakland. With the win, the Vikings captured the #HLTennis Regular Season title, improving to 12-9 on the year and 6-0 in league play.
This marks Cleveland State's seventh Horizon League Regular Season title and second undefeated season in league play.
The Vikings got out to the early 1-0 lead after picking up the doubles point, with
Sima Heren/
Oihane Vicario and
Tereze Vevere/
Ella Franz picking up matching 6-4 wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively.
Jenna Redmile then gave Cleveland State a 2-0 advantage with the first singles point of the day, earning a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles, before Vevere put the Vikings up 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-3 win at the No. 3 spot.
Cleveland State's clinching point came from Vicario at the top of the lineup then, as she came back from 4-1 down in the first set to post a 6-4, 6-2 victory to capture the win for the Vikings.
CSU then added points from
Melliz Petkova Mustafa (6-1, 4-6, 1-0(7)) and Franz (7-6(7), 6-1) at No. 6 and No. 4 singles, closing out the 6-1 match victory.
The Vikings will be back in action next weekend, when they open play in the 2025 #HLTennis Championship with a semifinal contest on Saturday, April 26.
