INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Cleveland State Athletics Team Physician Dr. Marie Schaefer was recently named to the NCAA Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports (CSMAS), representing Cleveland State University and the Horizon League on the national level.

Dr. Schaefer is part of a 25-member committee that includes athletic administrators, coaches, sports medicine staff, researchers, faculty, and student-athletes. The mission of CSMAS is to provide expertise and leadership to the Association in order to promote a healthy and safe environment for student-athletes through research, education, collaboration, and policy development.

"I am excited to be a member of the NCAA's Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports as I truly believe that thoughtful creation and implementation of policies make sports safer and fairer for all student-athletes," Dr. Schaefer said." It is rewarding to work with other members of the collegiate sports community and gives me great pride to represent the Horizon League and Cleveland State."

In addition to her role on CSMAS, Dr. Schaefer is also the Subcommittee Chair for the Drug Testing Subcommittee and Chair of the Drug-Test Appeal Subcommittee. As one of five physicians on CSMAS, she is also a member of the medical review panel.

"The Cleveland State Athletic Department is so fortunate to have Dr. Schaefer's leadership and expertise as our head team physician, and we are thrilled that she has been afforded this opportunity to share her knowledge and experience in a leadership role on CSMAS," Cleveland State Athletics Director Kelsie Gory Harkey said. "Her priority has always been the health and well-being of our student-athletes here at Cleveland State, and this role with CSMAS allows her to positively impact sport for all student-athletes at all divisions nationwide."

Dr. Schaefer has been a part of the Cleveland State Sports Medicine staff since January of 2019, serving as the Head Team Physician. As a board certified Family Medicine Physician with Cleveland Clinic Sports Medicine, Dr. Schaefer has a specialty certification in Primary Care Sports Medicine.

Along with her work at CSU, Dr. Schaefer is also a member of the Associate Board of the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission while also serving as the President of the Academy of Medicine of Cleveland & Northern Ohio.
