Cleveland State Men's Swimming & Diving Claims Magnus Cup Championship

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Vikings led from start to finish at the 12th annual Magnus Cup, completing the three-day competition with 1,662 points. St. Bonaventure were the runner-up with 1,312 points, and Youngstown State was third with 1,240 points.

The individual swimming started with the 100-yard IM as Alex Cucu won with a time of 50.70. Josh Merchbaker, who set the meet record in prelims with a 50.62, swam a 51.15 in finals to come in third. Aidan Florio swam a 51.71 to finish fifth. Michael Cucu placed 16th with a time of 53.16 and Nathan Dunhac was a spot back with a time of 53.17.

Daniel Lyngaas touched in 22.01 to come in sixth of the 50-yard butterfly while Cameron Craft was tenth with a 22.70. Andrew Arslanian won the B-final after finishing in 22.88. Ethan Mumma (22.96) was 14th, Nate Steiner (23.04) 16th, and Seth Smith (23.26) was 19th.

The 200-yard backstroke went to Jackson Nester as the senior clocked a 1:44.88. Brock Wallace placed ninth with a 1:52.62 and Tanner Beck was 13th after swimming a 1:51.70.

Cleveland State claimed the fifth through ninth spots of the 100-yard freestyle with Dogukan Tombul (45.27), Connor Green (45.30), Daniel Lyngaas (45.49), Cameron Craft (45.51), and Joe Parkhurst (45.68). Noah Greer rounded it out in 18th with a time of 46.35.

Schultze claimed the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing in 1:58.06 and Florio was third with a time of 2:00.08. Ahmad Abdalhak was the runner-up in the B-final with a time of 2:02.35, A. Cucu (2:04.56) was 14th and Dunhac (2:05.15) came in 16th.

Merchbaker placed second in the 50-yard backstroke after clocking a 22.67. Tombul (22.92) took fourth and Wallace (24.34) came in 13th place.

James Wolf scored 258.70 points to win platform diving, and the team won the competition with a 273.40.

Johnston swam a school record 1:45.26 to finish as the runner-up in the 200-yard butterfly. Steiner came in eighth after touching in 1:52.05.

The Vikings ended the competition with a meet record in the 400-yard freestyle relay as Johnston, Tombul, Lyngaas, and Green clocked a 2:57.34.
