Cleveland State Men's Swimming & Diving Remain in First After Day Two of Magnus Cup

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Vikings remain in first place with 1,117 points after the second day of the 2023 Magnus Cup Invitational. With one day left, Xavier is second with 909 points and Gannon is third with 662 points.

For the second straight day, the Green and White claimed the top two spots of 3m diving behind James Wolf (289.55 points) and Xander Austin (282.80 points).

Cleveland State started the night with a meet record in the 200-yard medley as Paddy Johnston, Tyler Schultze, Kenny Thomas, and Josh Merchbaker won with a time of 1:28.37.

In the 400-yard IM, Jackson Nester set the Magnus Cup record in the prelims with a 3:53.08 and toppled that in the finals with a 3:49.13 to win the event. His time is the second-fastest in program history. Reno James (4:02.85) placed fifth, and Vittorio Cappabianca (4:03.16) sixth. Tanner Beck won the B-finals after touching in 4:09.14.

Johnston was victorious in the 100-yard butterfly after clocking a 47.43. Daniel Lyngaas (48.28) came in third and Thomas Lundin (49.13) was fourth.

The 200-yard freestyle saw Connor Green finish as the runner-up with a time of 1:39.30. Quinn DeGraaf (1:41.91) took ninth and Zach Barnes (1:45.25) claimed tenth.

Schultze swam the eighth fastest time in the 100-yard breaststroke, winning with a 54.23. Blake Fry (56.65) nabbed eighth and Aidan Florio (56.95) tenth.

In the 100-yard backstroke, Thomas won with a 49.10 and Dogukan Tombul was the runner-up with a 49.17. Merchbaker took fourth after touching in 49.56.

The Vikings capped the evening with a Magnus Cup record in the 800-yard freestyle relay as Paddy Johnston, Daniel Lyngaas, Jackson Nester, and Connor Green set a Magnus Cup record with a time of 6:34.71.
