CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State men's tennis team opened its 2023 home slate Saturday, splitting its matches against Xavier (L, 4-3) and St. Bonaventure (W, 6-1).
In the first match of the day, the Vikings picked up the doubles point and got singles wins from Maxime Mareschal-Hay and Raul Teichmann against Xavier.
In doubles, Kade Mindry and Teichmann picked up a 6-4 win at the top of the lineup, while Carl Gedlitschka and JuandeDios Abboud earned a 7-6(6) victory at No. 2 doubles.
Mareschal-Hay's singles win came at the No. 1 spot with a 6-7(0), 6-0, 7-5 decision, while Teichmann earned a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 3 singles.
"We were one point away from having a great day today, but despite that I thought we had two great matches and had some unbelievable crowd support which was awesome," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "The Xavier match was super competitive and high level tennis all around, we just came up a bit short. Then in the second match against St. Bonaventure we were able to use our depth and came away with a good win. Kade and Raul did some heavy lifting for us today playing a lot of tennis, while some of our younger players were put into pressure situations which will definitely help them down the stretch."
The Vikings then picked up a 5-2 win against St. Bonaventure in the second match of the day. The Vikings were once again able to pick up the doubles point, with JuandeDios Abboud/Carl Gedlitschka and Maxime Mareschal-Hay/Austin Staiger earning matching 6-2 wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, respectively.
Cleveland State then added to its team lead with a 6-1, 6-4 victory from Abboud at No. 5 singles and a 6-3, 6-2 victory from Raul Teichmann at the No. 2 spot, while Devin Boyer clinched the match for the Vikings at No. 3 singles after his opponent retired.
The Vikings added one more win at the top of the singles lineup then, as Kade Mindry earned a 6-3, 7-5 victory at No. 1 singles.
After Saturday's matches, Teichmann has a team-best nine singles wins on the year, while Mindry has eight singles victories.
Cleveland State will return to action next weekend, hosting Butler and Findlay on Saturday, February 4.
