RedHawks Handle Vikings to Open New Year

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State University men's and women's swimming & diving teams both came up short to visiting Miami (Ohio) as both schools had their first dual of the New Year Tuesday afternoon at the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium.

The CSU men dropped a 162-136 decision to the RedHawks while Miami notched a 223-77 victory on the women's side.

Sophomore Jack Krusinski led the way for the Vikings as he won all three individual events he entered and also swam on a winning relay.

Krusinski won the 100 breaststroke in 56.85 seconds in his first individual event of the day. He proceeded to win his final two events—the 200 breaststroke and the 200 IM—by over one second, touching the wall in 2:05.99 and 1:53.60, respectively.

Krusinski had begun his day by swimming the second leg of CSU's winning 400 medley relay. Junior Timothy Kubacki led off while seniors Matthew Martin and Jack MacDonald swam the back half as the quartet finished first in 3:22.59.

Kubacki joined Krusinski in winning an individual event in addition to the relay as he took first in the 200 backstroke in 1:49.58. Kubacki was also the runner-up in both the 500 free (4:42.13) and the 200 IM (1:54.76).

Freshman Nathen Eberhardt and senior Dominic Poletta each posted an individual victory on the day.

Eberhardt won his first collegiate race by claiming first in the 200 freestyle in 1:42.91. He also took third in the 200 backstroke in 1:58.80.

Poletta won the 50 freestyle in 20.85 seconds while MacDonald was fourth in 21.28. In the 100 freestyle, MacDonald was the top CSU finisher and was followed by Poletta as the duo took second (46.84) and fourth (47.54).

MacDonald led off CSU's runner-up 400 free relay and was followed by junior Ryan Sedlak, Poletta and senior DJ Arslanian as the quartet finished in 3:05.02.

Arslanian was the runner-up in the 200 butterfly (1:54.12). Junior Alec Bowie took second in the 1000 freestyle (9:56.79) while Martin was runner-up in the 100 fly (50.30).

Senior Antony Styrt was the runner-up in both 1-meter (245.10) and 3-meter (267.15) diving for CSU while sophomore Konstantin Vincent was third in both events (230.48, 244.35).

After breaking a school record in CSU's last meet, freshman Emma Kerro swept the diving boards to lead the CSU women. She won the 1-meter with 249.97 points and finished first in the 3-meter with 261.45 points. Junior Erica Henrichsen was third in the 1-meter (220.73) and fourth in the 3-meter (234.23).

A trio of Viking women notched runner-up finishes on the swimming side.

Senior Gabriella Marinelli took second in the 50 freestyle in 24.78 seconds. She was also CSU's top finisher in the 200 free (1:58.29) and swam on the Vikings' top two relays Tuesday.

Senior Chuchu Yang was the runner-up in the 100 backstroke in 59.82 seconds while classmate Madi Jaszcz finished third in 1:00.12. Yang was also CSU's top finisher in the 200 back, which she finished in 2:11.16.

Sophomore Agnes Bahr was second for the Vikings in the 1000 freestyle in 10:52.60. She was also the fastest Viking in the 200 breaststroke (2:30.31).

Junior Alana Cartwright and sophomore Stephanie Sipple were both the fastest Vikings in a pair of individual events.

Cartwright led the way for CSU in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.12) and the 200 IM (2:16.67). Sipple was the top Viking in both butterfly events (1:00.36, 2:12.46).

Yang, Cartwright, junior Shaw Barney and Marinelli were the top CSU quartet in the 400 medley relay in 4:00.07 while senior Lauren Frank, Barney, Cartwright and Marinelli finished the 400 free relay in 3:42.30.

Cleveland State will be right back in action this weekend as it heads to UIC for a pair of tri-duals that also include IUPUI.
