CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State women's tennis team won its third straight match Friday afternoon, picking up a 5-2 victory over Bowling Green. The win improves Cleveland State to 3-3 this season.
"Although we got off to a slow start today, I thought the team did a great job of rebounding during singles play and focusing on the task at hand and battling their way back into this match," associate head coach Frank Polito said. "It was nice to see Victoria pick up a win in dual match play, and it was good to see Mathilde continuing her high level of play at the top of the lineup for us. Isabella and Aleksandra have been playing some great singles for us lately, and hopefully we can keep that going over the next few weeks as we continue to prepare for Horizon League play."
After dropping the doubles point, the Vikings were quickly able to even the match at 1-1 following a singles win at the No. 4 spot, as Victoria Bensimon picked up her first win of the spring season in a 6-1, 6-1 straight set decision over Bowling Green's Leeah Floyd. Cleveland State was then able to gain a 2-1 lead after Aleksandra Golawska won her third straight match at No. 5 singles, earning a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Marina Ferrero.
The Vikings then extended their lead to 3-1 after Jana Schober picked up a 6-1, 6-3 straight set victory over Bowling Green's Antonina Farrar, and then clinched the match with Isabella Spindler's third straight victory in a 6-1, 6-3 decision at the No. 3 spot. Spindler now has a team-best 5-1 singles record this spring.
Mathilde Orange posted Cleveland State's final singles win on the match at the top of the lineup, earning the 47th win of her career with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Paula Comella Aguilo. Orange is now just three wins shy of becoming the 12th Viking all-time to notch 50 career singles wins.
Cleveland State will return to action in two weeks, traveling to Western Michigan (Saturday, Feb. 27) and Michigan State (Sunday, Feb. 28) for a pair of contests.
