CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State men's tennis team evened out their record Sunday afternoon, defeating Case Western Reserve, 6-1. The Vikings are now 5-5 on the season, while the Spartans are now 7-5.

"We started really slow today, but eventually we picked it up and we were able to pull out the victory," assistant coach Jay Tee said. "We were really caught off guard with how fast Case came out during the singles matches, but once we were able to adjust and respond everyone raised their level of play and finished strong."

Cleveland State swept the doubles matches for the third time this season, led by the duo of Ali Shabib and Nolan Marks who posted an 8-5 victory at No. 1 doubles. The victory marked the second straight for the doubles team of Shabib and Marks. At No. 2 doubles, Yannick Goossens and Matt Ford picked up an 8-3 win, while Matt Kuelker and Jorg Van Der Vloet earned an 8-6 victory at the No. 3 spot.

During singles action the Vikings got wins from Kuelker, Shabib, van der Vloet, Marks and Ford. Kuelker, who was playing at No. 1 singles for the first time this season, picked up a 6-4, 6-3 victory for his fourth win of the season.

Ford posted his team-leading seventh victory of the spring season at No. 5 singles, claiming a 6-3, 6-3 win over the Spartans, while Marks posted a 6-1, 6-0 win at the No. 4 spot. Shabib pulled out a 6-2, 7-6 (6) victory at No. 2 singles and van der Vloet came from behind to notch a 0-6, 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles.

The Vikings will return to action next weekend when they travel to Florida for three matches over spring break. Cleveland State will open the trip with a 10:00 a.m. match at Embry-Riddle on Sunday (March 11), then they will face Stetson at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday (March 13) before playing Florida Atlantic on Wednesday (March 14) at 2:00 p.m.
