CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State women's tennis team split their contests Saturday (Feb. 25), earning a 7-0 victory over Oakland and falling to Bowling Green, 5-2. After the split the Vikings are now 6-4 on the season, while Bowling Green is 4-3 overall and Oakland is 0-8.
"The Bowling Green match was a hard fought battle and we had chances to win, but we did not take advantage of them," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "Our doubles teams continue to get better but we still need to keep working. This was the first day playing with a new doubles lineup, so we knew it would be a little difficult, but I know we will get to where we want to be eventually."
Cleveland State's two points against the Falcons came in singles play, as Nicole Janek continued her win streak with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles and Alex Power claimed a 6-4, 7-6 (5) win at the No. 4 spot.
The doubles team of Janek and Maria Lazaris also posted a victory against Bowling Green, earning an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles. With the doubles win, Janek has now been part of four straight doubles victories, dating back to the Ball State match (Feb. 17).
"We came in favored during the Oakland match because they were a little banged up due to injuries, but I think we still played some good, solid tennis to come away with the victory," Etzkin said. "I definitely liked how they kept their focus after a long day of tennis, especially during the singles matches. It was good to get the win today, but we need to continue to work on some things before we hit the court again next weekend."
The Vikings swept all nine matches against Oakland today, including a 6-0, 6-0 No. 5 singles victory from Janek. Her victory against the Golden Grizzlies was her team-leading eighth of the spring season, while Power notched her sixth singles victory at the No. 4 spot with a 6-1, 6-0 win.
Catrine Bjerrehus posted her second victory at No. 1 singles with a 6-1, 6-2 win, while Lazaris picked up a 6-2, 6-0 win at the No. 2 spot and Kara Sherwood claimed a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3. Mengdi Liu played at the No. 6 position for the Vikings, picking up a win by default.
The duo of Bjerrehus and Power, who were playing at No. 1 doubles together for the second time this season, picked up an 8-2 win, while Sherwood and Liu earned an 8-1 victory at No. 2 doubles.
The Vikings will hit the road again next weekend, as they travel to Dayton and Indiana for two contests. CSU will first face the Flyers at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday (March 3), before taking on the Hoosiers at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday (March 4).
