Final Stats

Cleveland, Ohio- The Cleveland State Vikings' women's swimming and diving team ended its weekend Sunday night with a second place finish at the Magnus Cup Invitational. The weekend was highlighted by both lifetime bests and record-breaking performances by multiple swimmers.

Junior Alexandra Johanssonwas one of those swimmers who shined, leading the way for CSU women all weekend long. She was able to bring home one school record (100 backstroke in 55.67), and seven victories in total in the three days. The junior picked up two relay wins- the 200 freestyle and 200 medley, as well as five individual wins. Along with her 100 back record she individually won the 50-yard freestyle (23.54), the 100 butterfly (55.00), the 50 butterfly (24.73), and the 100 freestyle (51.14).

"She just looks outstanding," said Head Coach Wally Mortonon Johansson. "She is having a great season and will just get better and better as the season goes on."

A second swimmer for the Vikings who really swam well all weekend long was senior Alice Sommerville. The senior joined Johansson with a record breaking performance, taking down the school record in the 200 breaststroke by two seconds with a time of 2:19.89.  She also joined Johansson on those two relay wins, and brought home multiple top level individual finishes. On the weekend she won the 100 breaststroke (1:03.52), and had top two finishes in the 400 freestyle relay (3:22.32), the 200-yard IM (2:05.79), the 50-yard freestyle (23.57), the 400 medley relay (3:48.46), and the 100 butterfly (55.91).

Johansson was involved in seven of the wins, while Sommerville was involved in three of them. The two combined accounted for every win for the Vikings except for Allison Pallija's 50 breaststroke win (30.46), and the 800 freestyle relay, a group that consisted of Christine KopackoJamie PulsGretchen Hestley, and Amanda Pallija. Those four won the 800 relay in a time of 7:38.32 for CSU.

Looking back on the weekend as a whole, Morton was very happy with the way the team performed.

"We had a fantastic meet, we're so excited about the way our swimmers and divers have been performing, "Morton said. "It really bodes well for the rest of the season."

The Viking women will be off from competition this coming weekend and will be back in the pool for the AT@T Winter National Championships in Austin, Texas November 29th through the December 1st.
